Dudelange is a community in the South of Luxembourg on the frontier to France. (latitude 49°28'43'' North; longitude 6°05'05'' Est) On the 1st of January 2010 18.909 people live in Dudelange and 38,54 % of them are foreigners, there are about 92 different nationalities in Dudelange.
1903 children from 4 to 12 years go to the primary school in Dudelange in the year 2009/2010 (965 boys and 8938 girls). 1067 of them are Luxemburgers, the other 836 are foreigners, (43,93% and 40 different nationalities). The children are taught from 195 teachers (149 feminine, 46 masculine). There are 12 different buildings. In the smallest there is only one class and in the biggest there are 22 classes.
The children that are three years old can go to the "précoce" (cycle 1.1.), where they enlarge and improve their language through the contact with other children. With four years they have to go to the kindergarten (cycle 1.2.) for two years, where they develop their manual, motoric and social competences. With six years they go to the primary school (cycles 2.1,2.2.;3.1,3.2.;4.1,4.2.), where they are for the next six years. They are teached to read and write in German, and from the second schoolyear on they also learn writing, speaking and reading French. These two languages are with the Maths the three main subjects, but they also have sciences, manual works, singing, luxemburgish, sports and religious or moral teaching. All in all, the young Luxemburger pupils go to school 28 hours in a week, and that during 37 weeks in the year. At the end of their primary school career, the students have to do a national test in German, French and in the Maths. After that, they go to the technical or classical secondary school that has nothing to do with the primary school.
The partner classes of the Comenius Project "Die 4 Jahreszeiten" are in 3 different school buildings: Butschebuerg, Ribeschpont and Strutzbierg. In the school building from the district Boudersberg, one of the oldest districts of the city there are 3 classes participating on the project. The class of Sonja Bigdowski and Françoise Back (cycle 2.1.) The children do have 6 or 7 years, and there are 12 boys and 8 girls. They are the youngest one participating on the project and they are just beginning to learn reading and writing and calculating.
The class of Jan Hennico (cycle 2.2.) The children do have 7 or 8 years, there are 12 girls and 11 boys. They do already learn the French language. The class of Antoinette Terzer and Maryse Flammang (cycle 4.2.) They are the oldest pupils participating on the project, they do have 12 or 13 years and next school year they will leave the primary school.
Another partner school in Dudelange (Diddeléng) called "Ribeschpont" was built in an entirely new urban district in the north of Dudelange. The school was inaugurated on the 28th of November 1998. Its construction was meant as an adaptation to the demographic evolution in this part of Dudelange. The building is of a rather modern conception and well integrated into its natural surroundings. Several green areas surrounding the school and generously distributed spaces within the principal building have been designed to give the location a free-spirited appeal, especially to its pupils.
Naturally, the school was also designed to respect ecological aspects. Only materials that do not represent a health hazard were used in its construction, and energy consumption is reduced to a minimum. Standard classrooms are usually connected with each other through an intermediate room, in order to further a modern style of teaching emphasising culture and communication. Highlights are the large sports hall and the small stadium, which are also used for leisure time sports activities in Dudelange. In order to stimulate the creativity and fantasy of the children, the premises have been decorated by artworks from the local artist Jean-Pierre Adam.
From the school Ribeschpont, the class of Felix Lentz (Cycle 3.2), with its 13 pupils (7 girls, 6 boys), will participate in the project. The children's age ranges from 9 to 10 years. 10 pupils are Luxembourgish, 1 child is French, and two children have a double nationality (LU/PT, LU/IT). This level (Cycle 3.2) is meant to refine language skills (German, French) and to develop mathematical competences. Luxembourgish is also promoted, but in a more modest way.
One of the partner classes of the Comenius project "THE 4 SEASONS" is located in the school complex called "Strutzbierg", in the centre of Dudelange.
The name "Strutzbierg" comes from the fire brigade that was located here in the last century. As the school is in the town centre, it is also called "Centre". The school complex is near all the important buildings and transports. There are three buildings: Centre A, Centre B, Centre C. In the past, when boys and girls were separated, the building A was for the boys and the building B was for the girls. The building C, which today is also an indoor-pool and a sports hall, has been a clubhouse and the local music school.
In the partner class there are 15 pupils, 7 girls and 8 boys; 5 are Luxembourgish and 10 are foreigners. There are 5 different nationalities and 5 children have moved to Luxemburg when they were younger. One student has lived here for just one year.
